S. O. Espresso Maui Mokka showed an acidity that was too low when we first evaluated this coffee so we passed on it. We were evaluating it as a drip coffee and it hadn’t crossed our minds that its low-acid profile would be ideal for espresso use. During the Western Regional Barista Competition we heard that Pete Licata had won using this coffee as one of his espressos. So we sampled this coffee as an espresso this time. Maui Mokka is an outright chocolate bomb with tons of sweetness to back it up. Like the other Maui coffee we carry there isn t a great deal of complexity with this coffee. Its beauty is in its simple sweet chocolaty flavor and upfront buttery body. Vanilla and caramel hints can be found but they re very subtle.
