False Profits: The IMF & World Bank

Who Wins - Who Loses When the IMF - World Bank - and WTO Come to Town When the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank arrive in southern countries - corporate profits go up - but so do poverty and suffering. Decades of promises that just a little more short-term pain will bring long-term gain have exposed the IMF and World Bank as false prophets whose mission is to protect those who already control too much wealth and power. This booklet contains brief articles written by 15 different NGOs who are fighting for worldwide economic justice. (24 pages - 2000) For more information - visit Global Exchange’s IMF/World Bank campaign.

The Recovery of the Commons - Shiva

Vandana Shiva It is almost a given that the industrialized countries - the North - are the epitome of progress and wisdom. The South - the Third World - is a place of backwardness and ignorance - but it does have lots of resources. The North wants to use those resources to continue to enrich itself. Today parts of the South are redefining and challenging conventional notions of growth and development. There is resistance to the destructive effects of transnational corporations and global capitalism and a new awareness of the value of indigenous knowledge and centuries-old diverse agriculture. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1994) Vandana Shiva of India is an internationally-renowned activist. She is the director of the Research Foundation for Science - Technology and Ecology in New Delhi. She is has pioneered research on biodiversity and indigenous ethnoscience. Dr Shiva is the recipient of the Right Livelihood Award - also known as the alternative Nobel Prize. East Timor: A Case of Genocide - Nairn

Allan Nairn Far from the newsrooms and awareness of North America and Europe is East Timor. It is half of an island in the Indonesian archipelago. It is east of Bali and 400 miles north of Australia. East Timor was a Portuguese colony for 400 years. It became independent in 1975. In that same year - it was invaded by Indonesia - an ally of the United States. A murderous occupation has ensued. East Timorese resistance - against tremendous odds - continues. The ongoing tragedy is rarely mentioned in media reports - yet it is the greatest proportional genocide since the Nazis. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1994) Allan Nairn is a top investigative journalist. He has been prominent in the effort to bring attention to the East Timor issue. In 1991 - he and his colleague Amy Goodman were caught in a peaceful demonstration in East Timor that was brutally attacked by the Indonesian army. Their report on the massacre won the prestigious Du Pont Award for journalism.
